Program Description:

Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia, has a population of about 95,000. It is located on the Lake Worthersee, one of the warmest Alpine lakes in Europe and is renowned for its beautiful architecture and for the many castles on the outskirts of the city. Situated 30 minutes from Slovenia and the Italian border, the city is known for its laidback personality with a Mediterranean flair.

The warm climate allows Klagenfurt to host many events that happen throughout the school year including Krampus, the Austrian Iron Man, FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam, and concerts by the lake. The climate also encourages outdoor activities such as swimming, boating, wind surfing, tennis, bicycling and hiking.

CampusLocated just a few minutes' walk from lake Worthersee, the University of Alpen-Adria Klagenfurt is one of the oldest exchange partners of UNI.  Established in 1964, it now enrolls approximately 7000 students who study at two faculties (colleges): the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Economics, Business Administration & Informatics (Computer Science).

Courses are offered in philosophy, education, history, foreign languages, applied mathematics, geography, applied computer science, business administration, mathematics and economics. The language of instruction is German, but many courses are offered in English as well. International programs are viewed as a critical component for the University, and exchange students are warmly welcomed.

City Exchange students with a high level of language proficiency may enroll in regular university courses. Those with limited or no proficiency in German may take courses in English in the department of "Anglistik und Amerikanistik."

Students are encouraged to take semester courses in German as a Foreign Language (Deutsch in Österreich). A three-week crash course in survival German is also offered free to exchange students at the beginning of their program of study. The Survey of Austrian Culture course includes a field trip to Vienna. Music courses and instruction are available through the KONSE (Carinthian State Conservatorium), but it is the student's responsibility to coordinate courses with the university prior to arrival.

dorm You must register for housing as an exchange student by July 1st. There is a 650 euro deposit to hold a room. You can contact the housing coordinator at Klagenfurt at with specific questions. Click here for more housing options.

Students may rent their bed linen from the Studentenheim for the semester for a small fee. Students are advised to bring a few kitchen utensils with them. More extensive cooking supplies are available in Klagenfurt at the local general store, Woolworth's, for a reasonable cost (this store is as close to a WalMart or Target as you will get in Austria).

AAU offers intensive German language courses over the summer months. These courses are 3 weeks in length and the regular €627.00 course fee can be fully covered by scholarships provided by AAU. Lessons are held on all 5 days of each week to allow students to improve their language skills as much as possible.
