Program Description:

Klagenfurt Logo   klagenfurt4The University of Klagenfurt exchange offers a unique opportunity for UNI students to study in one of the newest higher education institutions in Austria, live in the picturesque city of Klagenfurt, and experience rich Austrian culture firsthand. Due to Austria's central geographic location in Europe, UNI students will have an opportunity to travel around Europe if they wish to visit other countries. Austria also offers more travel fun and value than one would expect. It is a small country, compact, easy to get to know, and delightful to see. The exchange will assist students in transferring academic credits back to UNI.

The University of Klagenfurt offers UNI students comfortable accommodations in the new dormitory on campus (Neueheim), intensive German courses (2-3 weeks) or one semester of German at no cost (6 hours per week), and a free Culture and Social Program throughout the semester.

Program Location

Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia, has a population of about 95,000. It is located on the Lake Worthersee, one of the warmest Alpine lakes in Europe and is renowned for its beautiful architecture and for the many castles on the outskirts of the city. Situated 30 minutes from Slovenia and the Italian border, the city is known for its laidback personality with a Mediterranean flair.

The warm climate allows Klagenfurt to host many events that happen throughout the school year including Krampus, the Austrian Iron Man, FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam, and concerts by the lake. The climate also encourages outdoor activities such as swimming, boating, wind surfing, tennis, bicycling and hiking.

klagenfurt3Located just a few minutes' walk from lake Worthersee, the University of Klagenfurt is one of the oldest exchange partners of UNI.  Established in 1964, it now enrolls approximately 7000 students who study at two faculties (colleges): the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Economics, Business Administration & Informatics (Computer Science).

Courses are offered in philosophy, education, history, foreign languages, applied mathematics, geography, applied computer science, business administration, mathematics and economics. The language of instruction is German, but many courses are offered in English as well. International programs are viewed as a critical component for the University, and exchange students are warmly welcomed.

Academic Program

klagenfurtExchange students with a high level of language proficiency may enroll in regular university courses. Those with limited or no proficiency in German may take courses in English in the department of "Anglistik und Amerikanistik."

Students are encouraged to take semester courses in German as a Foreign Language (Deutsch in Österreich). A three-week crash course in survival German is also offered, free to exchange students at the beginning of their program of study. The Survey of Austrian Culture course, includes a field trip to Vienna. Music courses and instruction can be available through the KONSE (Carinthian State Conservatorium), but it the student's responsibility to coordinate courses with the university prior to arrival.
Accommodations and Meals

Sdormtudents are guaranteed accommodation in the new Studentenheim (privately owned student residence) located directly across from campus and the Mensa. Students share a room with another person and cook their own meals. You must register for housing as an exchange student by July 1st. There is a 650 euro deposit to hold a room. You can contact the housing coordinator at Klagenfurt at, with specific questions.  Here are also more options for housing.

Students may rent their bed linen from the Studentenheim for the semester for a small fee. Students are advised to bring a few kitchen utensils with them. More extensive cooking supplies are available in Klagenfurt at the local general store, Woolworth's, for a reasonable cost (This store is as close to a WalMart or Target as you will get in Austria!)
Program Costs

Students pay UNI tuition and fees (in-state or out-of-state) plus study abroad fee to participate. The program budget sheet lists cost for any optional intensive language course, housing, food, round-trip air transportation, in-country transportation, international health insurance, visa, personal expenses, and books and supplies.

Tales From Abroad

klagenfurt1"It gave me a new perspective on Europe, and the rest of the world. It also gave me a new perspective of America. How our media influences the whole world."
--Joel Heilman, Fall 2014

"I don't think I could really describe my whole experience in one quote, because it was so life changing. Learning about all the different cultures, personalities of those cultures, and seeing the world. It is really an experience that I would love to have the chance to do again. I could have never expected to grow and learn as much as I did. I think it really helped me to realize what person I want to become and how to get there."
-Bart Frederick, Spring 2013
