Study Abroad Access Award


This need-based scholarship is awarded by the UNI Office of Financial Aid and is for applicants of study abroad programs administered through the UNI Study Abroad Center. Eligible applicants must be in the "Committed" status in their study abroad application by the scholarship application deadline.

Eligibility:

  • Participation in a study abroad program for academic credit approved by the UNI Study Abroad Center.

  • Submitted on-line study abroad application, along with the $65 fee, is required. 

  • Only completed scholarships applications with all the required attachments will be considered.  

Note: Participants in non-UNI programs and administered UNI programs not co-sponsored by the UNI Study Abroad Center are not eligible for this scholarship.


Scholarship Application Deadlines: 
For spring semester programs: The last working day of October.
For winter break programs: October 15
For spring break programs: December 15
For summer programs: February 15
For fall and academic-year programs: The last working day of March.

Service Requirements of a Study Abroad Center Scholarship Recipient:

  • For Short-term Programs (less than 16 weeks long):
    • Participate fully in all portions of the program.
    • Be outstanding ambassadors of UNI, the state of Iowa and the United States. 
    • Complete the Abroad 101 program evaluation online after your participation in the program. You will receive an invitation to complete the evaluation after your program returns. If you do not receive this invitation, please consult with the Study Abroad Center. 
    • If you are participating in a spring-break and/or summer short-term program, once you return to UNI after studying abroad, volunteer for a minimum of 3 hours at the Fall International Opportunities Fair. If you are participating in a winter-break short-term program, once you return to UNI after studying abroad, volunteer for a minimum of 3 hours at the Spring International Opportunities Fair. You can find these dates on the IO Fair page. If you are not able to complete this requirement, you must submit a 5-page written summary discussing the academic and personal benefits of program participation upon completion of the program. This must be done within one month after the end of the program 
    • Complete a special project in collaboration with the Study Abroad Center be either attending a Study Abroad Center Digital Storytelling Workshop, providing 10-20 photos from your program abroad, and/or sharing your blog or vlog. 
  • For Semester Programs
    • Participate fully in all portions of the program.
    • Be outstanding ambassadors of UNI, the state of Iowa and the United States.
    • While abroad, provide regular e-mail reports of program events and activities at least every month to the Study Abroad Center at study-abroad@uni.edu. These reports should also include accounts of personal gains and general reflections.
    • Complete the Abroad 101 program evaluation online after your participation in the program. You will receive an invitation to complete the evaluation after your program returns. If you do not receive this invitation, please consult with the Study Abroad Center. 
    • Once you return to UNI after studying abroad, volunteer for a minimum of 3 hours at the Fall or Spring International Opportunities Fair. You can find these dates on the IO Fair page. If you are not able to complete this requirement, you must submit a 5-page written summary discussing the academic and personal benefits of program participation upon completion of the program. This must be done within one month after the end of the program

    • Serve as a point of contact and a reference to future program applicants during and/or after the program.
