New Funding Policy for Faculty-Led Programs
|
The UNI Academic Affairs Council has developed the following new funding model for UNI faculty-led short-term study abroad programs:
- As of August 23, 2011, regular UNI faculty planning to teach a short-term program abroad will be compensated at 1/27 per credit hour, in accordance with the Master Agreement Between the Board of Regents, State of Iowa and the UNI-United Faculty July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2013 .
- All new and returning programs will be approved through a review process using appropriate documentation provided by the Study Abroad Center on its website. Assessment of program proposals for academic rigor and appropriate credit hours will be done at the Departmental and College levels for each faculty-leader. The approval of programs taking into consideration financial viability and program redundancy rests with the Office of International Programs. Only completed proposals will be considered.
- All Faculty-leaders will be required to attend appropriate training for faculty leader of study abroad programs and will receive the 2011-12 Handbook for Course Leaders of Study Abroad Programs.
- All study abroad programs will be conducted in accordance with the International Study Policy 3.14.
- Faculty leaders will be expected to pay for their international airfare and in-country program expenses (housing, meals, transportation), excluding relevant budgeted cultural activities, (i.e., entrance fees) out-of-pocket.
- The Study Abroad Center in collaboration with the UNI Office of Finance will provide appropriate documentation to faculty leaders regarding their business-related non-reimbursable expenses incurred while leading a program abroad. This document will classify appropriate personal travel expenses as “non-reimbursable” and enable affected Faculty Leaders to deduct relevant expenses from State and Federal taxes.
- The Study Abroad Center will establish minimum enrollment goals for each study abroad program led by UNI faculty. These enrollment goals will need to be met in order to be allowed to travel. Programs not meeting the set enrollment goals will be put forward to the UNI AAC for its review and may receive financial subsidy to enable them to run.
Finally, UNI faculty wishing to lead courses abroad during the Winter and Spring breaks will not be affected by the new policy. The Faculty Leader’s travel and in-country expenses will be budgeted and paid for out of the program’s account. Salary compensation will either be at the adjunct rate or covered as part of a faculty member’s regular teaching requirements.
